Nebbiolo

nebbiolo.jpgNebbiolo is an Italian grape variety from the Piedmont region of Italy. It is highly acidic and deeply tannic and ripens late in the autumn. Barolo and Barbaresco are the best known Nebbiolo wines which tend to have tradtionally long maceration times of 3-4 weeks.

Health Benefits

Very good health benefits similar to Cabernet Sauvignon, due to its rich content of procyanidins, however inferior to those of the Tannat grape. The health benefits are higher when the wine is made from low-yielding vines with long fermentation and maceration times.

Ciabot Berton Barolo – Italy (Piedmont)
Highly tannic when young and usually aged for at least 3 years, but often 10 to 20 years. Is regarded as one of the best Italian wines, made from only the best Nebbiolo grapes. It is robust, full-bodied and very dry. It's high in acidity, alcohol and tannin. It gives ripe strawberries, tar, roses, violets and truffles on the nose. Serve only with food, especially when relatively young.

Nebboilo De Forville – Italy (Piedmont)
The accessibility (and perhaps also simplicity) of this wine surprised me. It shows a sweet, dark, chocolatey nose with an open, supple character. Sweet, ripe, accessible fruit dominates the palate. A forward, well-mannered wine.
