Syrah

vineyard.jpgSyrah, or Shiraz, is a smoky, spicy, blackcurrenty variety of grape. The names are interchangeable. It is called Syrah in France (Languedoc-Roussillon and Rhone Valley regions), Italy and most of the United States. In South Africa, Australia, and Canada it is known as Shiraz.

Synonyms

In Australia it used to be called Hermitage up to the late 1980s.

With respect to the healthy wines this site promotes, the Syrah, or Shiraz grape is not present as a key variety, as it is not particularly high in heart-friendly polyphenols. It can however be found in some of the blended wine varieties found on the Blends page.
